Are you having a Quarter-Life Crisis?

Do you feel like you're stuck in a rut, unsure of what direction your life is heading in, and questioning the decisions you've made so far?

Have you ever felt completely lost and despairing, to the point where it feels like life is meaningless?

Like your mind is wandering in an impenetrable fog?

As though you no longer recognize yourself?

If so, you may be in the midst of a Quarter-Life Crisis.

The term, “Quarter-Life Crisis” is used to describe the uncertainty and anxiety that many people experience in their 20s through early 30s, as they navigate the transition from a predetermined life of school into their career, new experiences, serious relationships, and adult responsibilities.

As a Quarter-Life Crisis researcher and coach, I have personally experienced a Quarter-Life Crisis, which led me to talk extensively on the subject, and I now help coach and educate people who are also going through their own Quarter-Life Crisis phase.

Here are some of the ways that a Quarter-Life Crisis can feel:

  • Feeling apathetic and unmotivated

  • Fearing that your best days are in the past

  • Feeling depressed, anxious, fearful, frustrated, and lost

  • Thinking of yourself as a failure, inept, and generally as “bad” or not “good enough”

  • Fearing that this period would last forever and that you will never feel “normal” again

What is a Quarter-Life Crisis?

A Quarter-Life Crisis is a psychological contraction in one’s self-development journey that can last a year or more, and manifests in a sense of disconnection and distress, lack of clarity, and a feeling that one is in a time of transition or at a turning point. A Quarter-Life Crisis can stem from life stresses including loss or rejection, feeling “locked-out” of life, or “locked-in"to” a commitment that one no longer wants.

Quarter-Life Crises have also become a very common experience, with some studies showing that as many as 75% of 25-35 year olds have experienced it at some point in their lives.

The trouble is, it can also be difficult to tell when you’re in a Quarter-Life Crisis or just having a normal trough phase of life.
